News on the Horizon

We have decided to move to the Outer Banks! We will be there by June and there will be many adventures and updates to let you in on when we get there.

Prepare yourself for surf kayaking, surfing, kayak sprinting, and more…

You should watch this film!

Today I watched this movie:

Bethany had told me how good it was, so considering that it was Sunday and I was sick, I decided to check it out. Figuring it was just another “climbing” movie – but with blind people. Climbing movies dont tend to thrill me so I was not expecting much. I was completely wrong! It was way more than just a climbing movie.

First of all a BLIND German lady goes to Tibet, (by herself) and opens a school for the blind. Then, the school kids read and learn about a guy who climbed everest blind and get inspired to do something similar. The lady who runs the school contacts this fellow and they decide to organize a expedition. Crazy. The movie is one of the best I have ever seen when it comes to the interpersonal aspects of a expedition. Anyways just watch it. It is on netflix for a limited time…

Trying to figure out my whitewater mojo

It seems like it has been raining non stop for the past month or so and this lead to some great local high water paddles and now that the rains have let up a little the Army Corp of Engineers decided it was time to release from the Dam.

The wave at the Dam is a little intimidating at higher flows. Since mortals are unable to attain to the wave at these flows, the most conveniant way to reach the wave is to seal launch from a rock directly into the “little” hole at the top of the rapid, ferry across, then drop right into the big one.

Setting up to Seal Launch (Don’t you love my color coordination… I do but actually i love my IR Double D Drysuit more):
Getting Ready to Drop In

Surfing the top hole to get into the middle:
Surf Over</

Dropping in:
Dropping in

We are surfing now!
Engulfed

The wave really surges…
Bounce

I have yet to really figure out the wave at this level. Maybe someday I will lay down the law and really be able to play on it.

It feels like Maine is following us…

We have been snowed in for two days now and are going a little crazy! Well I say snowed in, we probably got about 5 inches of snow… Not snowed in by Maine standards but snowed in by our southern Standards. Just in case you did not know we kayaked into Portland Maine and decided to live there last winter and this weekend is definitely giving us flashbacks!

Here is a little video from last winter in Maine.

And a photo from NC (yes this is North Carolina folks!)
its not maine

Now the real reason I am typing here… I just wanted to let you guys know to keep checking back to the site because we should have pictures up in a few weeks, as well as times/places were you can check out a presentation about our Maine to Key West trip!
